In today's world, she would be called psychic, or perhaps a person
with a gift. In the first half of the seventeenth century there were other
names for such people—words like witch and sorcerer.
On the surface, Mercy Browne seems like an ordinary young
Englishwoman, but she has known since childhood that she must keep secret the
fact that she has disturbing visions. That they always involve violence and
death is bad enough, but when she is in the throes of one, she enters a
trancelike state. If the wrong person notices her odd behavior, in England or
in the New World, she will be in mortal danger.
When Luke Hartford comes into her life, she is hard pressed to
know if he is friend or foe, but with little choice in the matter, she is
willing to follow him into the New England wilderness on his search for the
lost city of Norumbega.
This paranormal historical novel is based on my historical
romance, Firebrand, published in 1993. It has been completely rewritten
to focus on Mercy's journey of self-discovery rather than on the romantic
aspects, although many of the details of the plot remain the same. The reviews
below are of the earlier version, in which many of the characters had different
names and which was 24,000 words longer. Despite the shorter length, Treacherous
Visions contains many scenes not in Firebrand and starts at a much earlier
point in time.

Part of the story takes place in Plimoth Plantations.
Here is a photo I took a on research trip to that living history center. My
characters would have lived in a house much like this.
A
split boulder in the wilderness plays a role in Mercy's story.
