Corrections and additions to
Wives and Daughters: The Women of 16th Century England (1984)
made by the author, Kathy Lynn Emerson

page ii              Frances Newton seated, her sister standing should be Frances Newton standing, her sister (Johanna Newton) seated, although a recent biography (Susan E. James's Kateryn Parr: The Making of a Queen) identifies the sister as Lord Cobham's sister, Elizabeth Brooke, marchioness of Northampton. Since she died in 1565 and the painting is dated 1567, I am inclined toward the original identification.

PLEASE NOTE that WIVES AND DAUGHTERS: THE WOMEN OF SIXTEENTH CENTURY ENGLAND was published in 1984. Research for it was done in 1977-80, before the Internet. I cannot make changes in the print edition, now available via print on demand. I was going to attempt to update entries as I came upon information about individual women, but the task is just too big to be done that way. If you are interested in some particular woman, I suggest that you type her name into a search engine, together with the names of her father or her husband, and see what pops up. Many older reference books are now available electronically. A huge number of new reference books have been published since 1984. Enjoy the quest.
